Six Arrested After Gruesome Discovery of 33 Bodies in Kericho Mass Grave | BossNana International Radio

Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that they have arrested six suspects following the discovery of 33 bodies in a mass grave at the Kericho cemetery.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, is currently leading a probe into the origins of the remains and the specific circumstances surrounding their burial. During a visit to the Kericho Makaburini cemetery, Amin noted that investigators also questioned and released three additional suspects, though they remain persons of interest as the inquiry expands.

Early findings suggest the bodies originated from the Nyamira County Referral Hospital. Investigators believe a Toyota Land Cruiser transported the remains in four bags to the cemetery for burial. The DCI pointed to significant gaps in the hospital’s administrative trail, suggesting a breakdown in standard operating procedures.

“The hospital records show that the infants died in the wards, but there is no corresponding documentation confirming that the bodies were received at the mortuary,” Mohammed noted, highlighting serious discrepancies in official records

Investigators have launched forensic examinations, including DNA and toxicology tests, to identify the deceased and uncover the exact cause of their deaths. Authorities are currently tracing the parents of the infants to match DNA samples against hospital records. This search extends to patients who underwent medical procedures, such as amputations, to help cross-reference and verify the remains.

Forensic teams are also scrutinizing hospital and mortuary logs, court documents, and other official materials to confirm their authenticity and spot any administrative failures. Beyond the remains themselves, the inquiry aims to clarify the legal standing of the Kericho cemetery. Investigators are checking whether the site, owned by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), carries an official government gazettement as a public burial ground.

Amid the shocking discovery, Amin praised the local community for maintaining their composure. He reassured the public that his team is treating the matter with the gravity it deserves to ensure justice and transparency.

The development comes after Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo distanced his administration from the discovery of 33 bodies at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho Town, clarifying that the county only authorized the disposal of 13 remains.

The governor explained that the Nyamira District Referral Hospital released the 13 bodies for transport and burial in Kericho, maintaining that the entire process complied with established legal procedures.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has exhumed 33 bodies from a mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery, identifying 25 infants and eight adults among the remains. This grim discovery followed a court-authorized operation that initially targeted only 14 bodies reported to have been buried at the site under suspicious circumstances.
