Ruto Confirms Major Progress in Sh7.4bn Kibera Soweto East Housing Project | BossNana International Radio

President William Ruto has reported significant progress in the construction of the Kibera Soweto East Zone B Affordable Housing Project and reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to improve living standards in informal settlements by providing modern, well-equipped homes complete with essential services.

During an inspection of the housing project on Tuesday afternoon, the president noted that the government remains focused on its housing goals, regardless of opposition from critics. He voiced strong confidence that the mission to provide every Kenyan with a dignified place to live will ultimately succeed.

The president described the transformation of these settlements as a move that goes far beyond simple construction. He views the initiative as a vital step toward restoring self-respect, enhancing livelihoods, and creating new opportunities for millions.

“The transformation of informal settlements is not just about housing; it is about restoring dignity, improving livelihoods, and creating opportunities for millions of Kenyans. We are determined to ensure that every Kenyan, regardless of income, has access to decent and affordable housing,” said President Ruto.

The Sh7.4 billion Kibera project has reached over 80 percent completion and will eventually provide 4,465 housing units comprising 3,052 one-room units, 1,100 two-room units, and 313 three-room units.

“Shortly, we will break ground for the construction of another 15,000 homes in Kibra,” Ruto announced.

To support the new community, the development includes a health center, a primary school, and a kindergarten. Additionally, the project features essential infrastructure such as upgraded roads, a steady water supply from two boreholes, and a modern waste management system to ensure a clean and sustainable environment for residents.

To manage the threat of flooding, engineers have designed an open drainage system and a network of culverts that channel rainwater directly into the Ngong River. This infrastructure ensures the new neighborhood remains safe and dry even during the heavy rains that frequently impact the city.

The plan includes the construction of paved internal access roads and a new link road to Joash Olum Primary School.

The project has already acted as a significant economic engine for the area, creating more than 2,500 direct jobs for local residents. This surge in employment stems from a high demand for materials like doors, windows, and balustrades, which the government is sourcing directly from the local Jua Kali sector.

Simultaneously, the State Department for Housing and Urban Development is working to expand housing options within Kibera even further. Plans are currently in motion to revive the stalled Kenya Railways Corporation housing project, a move that could soon add 900 more units to the area’s housing stock.
