Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised to hike police salaries if he wins the upcoming election, arguing that better pay will end the harassment Kenyans often face on the roads. During a tour of the Ukambani region on Monday evening, Gachagua told a crowd in Makueni County that prioritizing officer welfare remains the only way to restore public trust.
“We want the police to take tea at home so they can stop harassing people on the road,” he said. “If we get into government, we will increase your salaries and fix your issues.”
Addressing local residents, Gachagua criticized the current state of the National Police Service, linking misconduct directly to low wages and poor working conditions. He proposed a reform agenda centered on rebuilding the fractured relationship between law enforcement and the public. He noted that officers should prioritize fairness and understanding over punitive enforcement.
“We want to make changes so we fix things and restore friendship between the police and common mwanainchi,” he said.
During a lighthearted moment that sparked laughter from the crowd, Gachagua suggested a novel approach to handling minor alcohol-related incidents. He proposed that law enforcement prioritize getting people home safely over making arrests for minor intoxication.
“If a police officer finds you after taking two or three drinks, instead of putting you in a Land Cruiser, he should take you directly to your wife,” he said.
These comments highlight a broader political message Gachagua is carrying across a five-day tour of Makueni, Kitui, and Machakos counties. He is using this trek through the region to engage directly with residents and build momentum for the 2027 general election. Following the first day of his tour, Gachagua explained that these visits serve to keep his supporters updated on national affairs while offering a new political direction for the country.
“Forward ever, backwards never. As the United Alternative Government team, we have embarked on our five-day tour across Makueni, Kitui and Machakos,” he said. “Our mission is to keep our supporters informed about the current happenings in our country and to share our vision and solutions for the upcoming general elections.”
