Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo reports that the Raila Odinga International Stadium is now in its final construction phase, marking a significant step in Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Omollo said the 60,000-seater facility has completed its main superstructure, allowing construction teams to shift focus to technical installations that will transform the venue into a fully operational, world-class stadium.

Final Installations Take Shape

Work at the site has intensified, with crews installing spectator seating, broadcast systems, and advanced floodlighting. Engineers are also completing electrical and ICT fittings to meet global standards for connectivity and live sports coverage.

“The project is in its final construction phase, with the superstructure complete and works focusing on seat installation, broadcast systems, lighting and final electrical and ICT fittings. Internal finishes are nearing completion, with installed public address systems, screens and floodlights bringing the arena closer to operational readiness,” said PS Omollo.

The stadium, previously known as Talanta Sports City, is designed to rank among the most technologically advanced sports venues in the region.

Smart Technology and Sustainability at the Core

Beyond its scale, the facility integrates modern innovations aimed at efficiency and sustainability. It includes VAR-enabled officiating suites, a rainwater harvesting system for pitch irrigation, and a fully equipped irrigation pump room.

Developers have also installed comprehensive fire safety systems and a domestic water storage network to support operations during large-scale events. A standout feature is the roof-harvested rainwater management system, which collects, treats, and recycles water specifically for maintaining the playing surface.

Iconic Design Meets Advanced Engineering

The stadium’s design blends national identity with cutting-edge engineering. Its exterior façade draws inspiration from Kenya’s national emblem, while a computerized hydraulic tension cable system supports the roof structure – placing it among a select class of globally advanced stadiums.

“Its exterior façade draws from Kenya’s national emblem, while a computerised hydraulic tension cable system supports the roof structure, placing it among a select group of globally advanced stadiums,” said PS Omollo.

Security, Logistics, and Tournament Readiness

Authorities have prioritized safety and coordination as the project nears completion. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is overseeing multi-agency operations, ensuring compliance with national and international event standards.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been instrumental in synchronizing multi-agency operations around the project, overseeing compliance with national event security standards, coordinating crowd management frameworks, and aligning local administrative units to support the stadium’s certification as a secure, tournament-ready venue,” added PS Omollo.

A Landmark Project for AFCON 2027

President William Ruto launched construction of the stadium in March 2024, setting an accelerated timeline to deliver the project ahead of AFCON 2027. The government later renamed the venue in honor of Raila Odinga, cementing its status as a national landmark.

Once complete, the stadium will serve as a key venue during the continental tournament, hosting both the opening and closing ceremonies. With a capacity of 60,000 and modern, fan-focused amenities, including retail outlets and professional-grade changing rooms, the facility is set to welcome thousands of football fans from across Africa and beyond.

As construction enters its final stretch, the Raila Odinga International Stadium stands poised to become a defining symbol of Kenya’s ambition to deliver a world-class sporting spectacle in 2027.
