Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has provided a progress update on the construction of the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct, confirming that the project is steadily advancing toward completion. In a statement issued on Monday, April 13, the PS highlighted that key civil works are now visible to the public, marking a significant milestone for the urban infrastructure project.
According to Omollo, the installation of reinforced concrete piers and substructures is largely complete along the corridor. Current efforts have shifted to superstructure works, with noticeable progress near the NHIF Building where sections of the elevated deck have already been positioned.
“Construction is steadily advancing, with key civil works already visible. Reinforced concrete piers and substructures are in place along the corridor, while superstructure works are progressing, particularly around the NHIF Building, where sections of the deck have already been elevated,” the statement read.
The project, managed by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), is a strategic intervention designed to decongest Kenyatta Avenue and the surrounding CBD by streamlining traffic flow through elevated transit lanes.
The Kenyatta Avenue viaduct is strategically engineered to link Valley Road directly to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD). By elevating through-traffic above historically congested intersections, the project aims to drastically reduce commute times to the city center. The corridor spans from the Integrity Centre to the Serena Hotel.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo detailed that the structure features an elevated dual carriageway stretching approximately one kilometer. In a push for modern urban mobility, the design includes integrated cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways to accommodate non-motorized transport.
“Modern drainage systems are also being incorporated to address urban flooding challenges, enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the City’s infrastructure,” Omollo added.
The State Department for Internal Security is overseeing road safety and security compliance during the construction phase to ensure the viaduct remains an orderly urban asset. While the project was originally intended for a 2023 completion, funding hurdles led to a stall; however, work successfully resumed in July 2025. The broader infrastructure package also encompasses the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass and various surrounding road network upgrades.
Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Overpass Nearing Completion
This update follows a similar report from PS Omollo on Friday, April 10, regarding the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road overpass (commonly known as the Junction Mall Flyover). That project has entered its final stages, with contractors currently installing:
-
Guard rails and safety barriers
-
Street lighting
-
Ancillary structural finishes
Completion for the Junction Mall Flyover is expected within the next two months, marking a significant step in elevating Nairobi’s infrastructure to match its status as a leading continental capital.
“As part of the ongoing elevation of critical infrastructure in Nairobi to match its stature as a Capital City, the Junction Mall Flyover, also known as the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road overpass, is nearing completion,” PS Omollo said.
