Several regions across Kenya should prepare for a significant increase in rainfall starting this Thursday, according to a new advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
The weatherman notes that while the week begins with lighter showers, the downpour will intensify as the “long rains” season gains momentum. Residents should expect afternoon and nighttime showers, often accompanied by thunderstorms.
Affected Regions and Counties
Between March 17 and March 23, 2026, the following areas will see increased rain activity:
-
Highlands East of the Rift Valley: Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.
-
Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley: Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok.
-
South-eastern Lowlands and the Coast: Rainfall in these regions will also pick up in intensity from Thursday.
What to Expect
The agency predicts a transition from sunny intervals early in the week to more consistent morning rain and heavy evening thunderstorms.
Rainfall will also reach the southeastern lowlands, affecting Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta Counties, along with the inland areas of Tana River County.
The Coast – including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the Tana Delta – will experience showers that are likely to intensify starting Thursday.
In Nairobi and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, residents should prepare for a wet week. The forecast predicts morning rain in isolated spots, followed by afternoon and evening showers that may cover broader areas as the week progresses. The Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley will follow a similar pattern: mostly sunny at the start of the week, with rain becoming more frequent later on.
The Meteorological Department has also warned that some regions may face sudden heavy downpours, which could lead to localized flooding.
While most of the country prepares for rain, North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya will likely remain sunny and dry, though isolated showers could still occur.
Meteorologists have urged the public to monitor daily updates and follow safety protocols, particularly those living in areas prone to flooding.
Safety Tips for Potential Flooding
-
Avoid Crossing Water: Never walk or drive through moving water; even shallow flows can be powerful enough to sweep you away.
-
Seek Higher Ground: If you live in a flood-prone area, stay alert to rising water levels and move to safer ground immediately if necessary.
