The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has postponed its upcoming grassroots elections following the sudden death of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno.
In a notice issued on Monday, March 2, National Election Board (NEB) Chairman Anthony Mwaura confirmed that all repeat Phase 3 polls originally scheduled for Saturday, March 7, will now move to a later date. The decision honors the memory of Ng’eno, who served as a distinguished leader within the party’s electoral board.
“The UDA NEB regretfully wishes to inform all respective UDA leaders, members, and candidates of the postponement of the repeat phase 3 grassroots elections slated for Saturday, March 7, following the sudden and tragic demise of one of its distinguished leaders, Johana Ng’eno,” the notice read.
The late lawmaker died on Saturday, February 28, in a helicopter crash in Nandi County. The accident, which claimed the lives of five others, occurred while Ng’eno was traveling to a series of high-profile meetings across Nandi and Narok Counties.
While funeral arrangements are currently underway, preliminary investigations point toward adverse weather conditions. Recent heavy rainfall across the region likely contributed to the fatal crash.
New Election Schedule: Key Dates to Watch
The UDA has restructured its electoral calendar to allow members a period of mourning while ensuring the democratic process remains on track. The party has now rescheduled the repeat elections to Saturday, March 14, with a second wave of polls set for April 9.
Phase 3 Repeat Elections (March 14)
The following counties will head to the polls on the new mid-March date:
-
Meru and Tharaka-Nithi
-
Nyandarua and Nyeri
-
Murang’a and Kiambu
Expanded Grassroots Polls (April 9)
The board has slated a massive round of elections for early April, covering the Rift Valley, Western, and Coastal regions:
-
Rift Valley/Western: Samburu, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, and Vihiga.
-
Coast/North Eastern/Nyanza: All counties in the Coast and North Eastern regions, plus Machakos, Makueni, Turkana, Kajiado, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Kakamega.
These upcoming repeat elections follow an initial phase conducted in January. Following reviews by the party’s internal electoral bodies, officials sanctioned fresh polls in select regions to ensure transparency and fairness.
The first phase of the UDA grassroots exercise previously covered Nairobi, West Pokot, Homa Bay, Busia, and Narok. The party reported several logistical and procedural challenges during that window but has since developed a new framework to address those concerns in the upcoming rounds.
The National Election Board urges all members and candidates to take note of these changes as the party navigates this somber transition.
