The government has identified 37 neighborhoods in Nairobi as major flood risks as heavy rains continue to batter the capital and other parts of the country.
According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, these ongoing downpours have sharply increased the danger of flooding in both cities and rural villages, with Nairobi currently bearing the brunt of the crisis.
Officials identified these high-risk spots through a detailed mapping exercise under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme. This initiative focuses on restoring the city’s natural water systems while helping the capital better prepare for climate-related disasters.
The study pinpointed 37 specific neighborhoods that sit dangerously close to major river corridors or the Nairobi River’s many tributaries.
“In light of the ongoing heavy rains, residents living near riparian zones and low-lying areas are advised to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety,” the ministry said in a statement. “Multi-agency disaster response teams continue to coordinate relief and response efforts in the affected areas.”

The relentless rainfall has sparked a crisis across Nairobi, leaving a trail of chaos in its wake.
On Saturday night, floodwaters surged through the city, submerging neighborhoods from Parklands and the CBD to Kilimani, Kibera, and Lang’ata. The situation turned dire for many; rescue teams worked through the night to save 13 people, including 11 passengers trapped in a matatu on Bunyala Road and two children caught in a flooded home in Kilimani.
The deluge also paralyzed the city’s transport network. Sections of the Nairobi Expressway near the Museum Hill exit, along with Limuru, Bunyala, and Lusaka roads, turned into impassable rivers. Even the University of Nairobi wasn’t spared, as students had to wade through flooded hostels to save their belongings.
As both the Nairobi and Ngong rivers overflow their banks, authorities are pleading with everyone to stay off flooded roads and riverbanks. With more rain in the forecast, the government is urging residents to report any emergencies to local response teams immediately.
