Police in Kwale County have launched investigations into a shocking shooting incident in which a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger killed a Kenya Police Service (KPS) officer, seriously injured two others, and then turned the gun on himself.
According to a police report released on Wednesday, the deadly encounter unfolded as two police officers, Stanley Karithi and Aftin Farah Ali, rode a motorcycle from Nyango toward Kilibasi. Along the way, they encountered two KWS rangers, John Ndichu and Eric Mugambi, who were also on a motorcycle and attached to the Kilibasi KWS camp.
The two police officers had stopped a motorcycle carrying charcoal, which was being ridden by Salim Mwandoro, when the KWS officers arrived at the scene.
Dispute Over Goats Sparked Deadly Confrontation
Investigators say a heated disagreement broke out after PC Stanley Karithi questioned Ranger John Ndichu about two goats that had allegedly been collected on behalf of the police officers during the festive season but never delivered.
What began as a verbal exchange quickly turned deadly.
“Ranger John Ndichu became hostile and opened fire using his rifle. He shot PC Stanley Karithi four (4) times in the chest, killing him instantly. He then shot PC Aftin Farah Ali once in the right ribs, seriously injuring him. The injured officer was rushed to Voi Hospital,” the report said.
The shooting also left a civilian critically injured.
“The ranger also shot Salim Mwandoro in the right ribs, seriously injuring him. He was rushed to Mariakani Hospital.”
Ranger Turns Gun on Himself
After the deadly rampage, the KWS ranger turned the weapon on himself.
Police said Ndichu shot himself under the chin and died on the spot, bringing the violent episode to a tragic end.
Officers secured and processed the scene before transferring the bodies to Voi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where pathologists will conduct post-mortem examinations.
Authorities also recovered and seized two MK-7 rifles belonging to the KWS rangers as part of the ongoing investigation.
