Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu on Saturday delivered a personal message to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a burial ceremony in Murang’a County, striking a conciliatory tone amid shifting political alliances.
Nyamu spoke at the funeral of Alice Wangari Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, held at Makomboki village. The ceremony drew a large gathering of mourners, including political leaders from both national and county governments. Gachagua attended the service and sat quietly among the mourners as Nyamu addressed the crowd.
In her remarks, the senator spoke directly to the former deputy president, reflecting on their past working relationship and the mutual respect she said still exists between them.
“I usually miss you and often look at old videos of how we used to work well. I wish things could continue in that way,” Nyamu said.
Her comments appeared to acknowledge the political rift that has since emerged while underscoring a desire for unity beyond partisan lines.
Nyamu reminded those present of the personal bond she once shared with Gachagua, even as political realities have shifted.
“The second deputy president of Kenya, you know that I was your friend,” she said. “Even when we are on different sides, we are all a community, and we will never fall out.”
The senator also spoke warmly about her relationship with the Gakuya family, describing it as one rooted in closeness and mutual support. She revealed that she reached out to James Gakuya immediately after learning of his mother’s passing to offer her condolences and stand with the family during their time of grief.
“Because things are the way they are right now, I won’t say where I stand, but you all know,” she added.
