Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has doubled down on his commitment to a united Opposition, vowing that the United Opposition coalition will field a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua made the declaration on Sunday during a church service at Christ Dominion Ministries in Kasarani, Nairobi, where he accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of plotting to divide the Opposition. He maintained that the alleged schemes had collapsed.
“I want to assure you that we are steadfast and will remain united in the Opposition. We will liberate this country together,” he said.
Claims of Government Attempts to Court Kalonzo
Gachagua alleged that the government had mounted an aggressive campaign to woo Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, describing the efforts as signs of growing political anxiety.
“There have been efforts to woo Kalonzo to their side. They have been trailing him everywhere and inviting him to join them, but I want to assure you that my cousin here cannot betray the people of Kenya,” Gachagua asserted.
He said government operatives shifted strategy after failing to convince Kalonzo, claiming they were now trying to create rifts within the emerging Opposition front.
“The relationship between Kalonzo and I is not about leadership, it is not about politics, it is not about the presidency, it is family. Blood is thicker than water. If you think you can divide a family, forget it,” he said.
Mt Kenya–Ukambani Unity
Gachagua highlighted what he called a new era of unity between Mt Kenya and Ukambani communities, arguing that years of political division had hindered their collective progress.
“We will sit as a family and all our decisions going forward will be family decisions,” he noted.
He also praised Wiper Party’s rising influence in Nairobi, attributing its strength to years of cooperation with ODM in city politics.
DCP-Wiper Cooperation Ahead of 2027
The former Deputy President said the strengthening alliance between the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) and Wiper would help streamline candidate nominations and reduce internal competition in key regions.
“Where Wiper is strong, DCP will support Wiper. Where DCP is strong, we will request Wiper to support DCP — and in the process we take all seats,” he said.
Gachagua stressed that the coalition was not sidelining ODM but urged Raila Odinga’s party to resist government overtures and remain in the Opposition fold.
“We are asking ODM to join us. Even if you do not want to sit with me, sit with Kalonzo – you have been together with him for 15 years,” he said.
“We want the face of Kenya in Nairobi, and we do not want ODM to be left behind.”
He added that the Opposition relied heavily on Kalonzo’s political experience to craft a winning Nairobi strategy ahead of the 2027 vote.
However, Gachagua cautioned that if ODM chose to work with the government, the emerging coalition would move on without them.
“But if they decide to follow Ruto, then we cannot help them.”
Praise for Kalonzo Musyoka
Gachagua described Kalonzo as a patriotic, dependable leader, saying their collaboration over the past year had strengthened trust between them.
“I have worked with Kalonzo for one year now, and I have come to the realization that he is an honest man. He is a patriot and we will walk with him and the rest of Kenya,” he said.
