Emergency Care in Nairobi Gets a Boost With Mbagathi Hospital Oxygen Plant | BossNana International Radio

Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital has unveiled a new oxygen plant worth Ksh11 million, a development set to transform emergency care and improve patient outcomes at the county referral facility.

The new plant allows the hospital to produce clean, reliable medical oxygen on-site daily, reducing its dependence on external suppliers. The oxygen is now piped directly to all wards, ensuring faster response times and uninterrupted supply for patients in critical condition.

Hospital CEO Dr. Alexander Irungu hailed the project as a “game-changer” for emergency and specialized care services.

“This means patients will no longer have to wait or worry when they urgently need oxygen,” Dr. Irungu said. “Doctors and nurses will now respond faster during emergencies, and more lives will be saved because oxygen will always be available.”

The oxygen plant is also expected to significantly cut the hospital’s operational costs, which previously averaged Ksh4 million every quarter for oxygen purchases. According to Dr. Irungu, the savings will be redirected to support other essential health services within the hospital.

“For many families, this plant brings comfort and hope,” he added. “It will help children, mothers, and all patients who depend on oxygen to breathe and recover.”

Amref Health Africa partnered with the hospital to deliver the project, providing both funding and technical support for the installation. The organisation’s team, led by Dr. Githinji Gitahi, joined hospital leadership in celebrating the milestone, underscoring the importance of cross-sector collaboration in enhancing public healthcare.

The commissioning also highlighted the longstanding partnership between Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital and Amref Health Africa, aimed at strengthening emergency response systems and raising standards of care across Nairobi County.

Health officials at the event noted that the new infrastructure aligns with broader efforts by the Nairobi County Health Department to enhance medical preparedness, self-sufficiency, and resilience across the county’s referral facilities.
