The National Police Service (NPS) has dealt a big blow to cattle rustlers in the Meru-Isiolo border region, successfully recovering 204 head of cattle that had been stolen in a recent raid.
In a formal statement released on Tuesday, December 30, the NPS confirmed that the recovery was the result of a swift and coordinated response by security teams based in Meru County. The operation, which involved multi-agency teams, caught up with the bandits as they attempted to drive the livestock into hideouts across the border.
According to the police, the massive herd was intercepted following a 24-hour tracking operation that began immediately after the theft was reported. The bandits, overwhelmed by the arrival of security forces, abandoned the animals and fled into the thickets near the border.
The breakdown of the recovery includes:
-
204 cattle recovered in total.
-
Zero casualties reported during the recovery phase of the operation.
-
Multi-agency coordination involving local police and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU).
The livestock are currently being held under police guard as the process of identification and handing over to the rightful owners commences.
The NPS has reiterated its commitment to ending the cycle of violence and economic sabotage caused by stock theft in the northern frontier.
“The National Police Service continues to intensify operations against livestock theft through coordinated patrols, multi-agency collaboration, and community partnerships, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding livelihoods and enhancing security,” the police statement noted.
This recovery comes at a critical time when security agencies have been under pressure to curb rising incidents of banditry in Meru North and Tigania. Just last month, the region witnessed several fatal raids, leading to the deployment of additional resources to secure the volatile “grazing zones.”
Residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements of large herds to the nearest police station or through the toll-free emergency lines.
