Police in Nairobi are investigating the brutal murder of a 30-year-old father of three, Antony Otieno, who was killed at Meridian Apartments in South B in what detectives believe was a setup disguised as a phone delivery.
Antony’s body was found hidden under the bed in house number 72 on the fifth floor. His head and legs were tied, and investigators say a scarf had been stuffed into his mouth.
On the morning of the attack on November 18,, Antony left a shop in Nairobi’s CBD at around 10:30 a.m. and rode to Meridian Apartments to deliver a brand-new iPhone 17 Pro Max that had been ordered online
The order had come through WhatsApp from a man who claimed to be in Eldoret and used the number 0108577041. He told Antony that his brother, Hillary, would collect the package at the Airbnb unit the men had booked for a short stay. Payment, he said, would be confirmed once the phone was received. That was the last time Antony communicated with anyone.
Hours later, his body was found under the bed. His hands and legs had been tied with rope, and a leso had been wrapped tightly around his mouth. Blood pooled beneath him, and an autopsy later confirmed he died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Detectives recovered a knife, a metal rod believed to be the murder weapon, and the very phone Antony had been delivering. His motorcycle, registration KMFH 161S, was still parked outside the building.
The apartment had been paid for just hours earlier by two unidentified men, who handed Ksh.2,500 in cash to the Airbnb host, Charity Muthoni Michoki. She said she received a message around 9:30 a.m. assuring her the remaining bill would be settled later. But when she went to inspect the room, one of the men asked her to wait.
When she eventually checked the unit, she found blood on the floor and the bedroom door locked. Neighbours helped her force entry, leading to the grim discovery.
Police have now forwarded the phone numbers 0108577041 and 0783041879 to Safaricom for identity tracing. Investigators believe the suspects used the high-value phone order to lure Antony to his death.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to assist in tracking down the killers. The manhunt remains active.
