Govt Promises Kakamega Locals Direct Benefits from Ksh.683 Billion Gold Discovery | BossNana International Radio

The government has assured Kakamega County residents that the recent Ksh.683 billion gold discovery in Isulu–Bushiangala will ensure real benefits to local communities, in addition to ongoing development projects across the Western region.

Speaking during the Western Region Media Projects Tour, Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura highlighted the measures that are being taken to ensure the gold discovery becomes a driver of economic growth and not a source of conflict.

Dr. Mwaura clarified that the mining law of Kenya clearly outlines revenue sharing to protect the interests of the communities.

The law stipulates that under mining, 70% goes to the national government, 20% to Kakamega County, and 10% directly to the local community. Mining firms are also obliged to utilize 1% of annual gross sales for community development projects.

A community committee of 14 members will be established to oversee the funds. Their priority spending will include expenditures on roads, schools, health centers, water systems, and environmental protection initiatives.

He also assured the residents that no one would be relocated without due compensation, adding that government teams were already in place to make the process transparent and humane.

“These measures are crucial to ensuring the project boosts the economy, strengthens local development, and allows mining operations to proceed smoothly and transparently,” Dr. Mwaura said.

He affirmed the commitment of the Kenya Kwanza Administration to equitable development, saying that their government is keen on creating jobs, reducing poverty, and enhancing livelihood in all regions.

Dr. Mwaura listed ongoing national programmes in agriculture, education, trade, infrastructure, and markets, saying that “no region is being left behind.”

The Western Region, covering Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia, has benefited from more than 77 major government projects that include gold processing plants, roads, bridges, airstrips, industrial parks, affordable housing units, water supply expansions, modern markets, and energy projects.

He said the media tour allows residents to see the government’s investments firsthand and encourages a sense of ownership.

“We want the community to be part of the process and benefit directly from these developments,” Dr. Mwaura added.
