Police have arrested two people for allegedly robbing a British man of Ksh.800,000 during a staged romantic encounter in Nyali, Mombasa.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Samira Mumbi Kiarie had been pursuing the foreigner for months through the internet, confessing her feelings and making promises of eternal love.
The statement further reveals that minutes after the victim arrived at the girl’s apartment in Nyali, two men walked in on them. One claimed to be Samira’s husband, while the other disguised himself as an officer, showing a fake police ID as proof.
The “husband” accused the victim of wrecking his home while the fake officer threatened him with arrest. The criminals then forced the victim to transfer Ksh.800,000 into phone numbers they provided.
After receiving the cash, they escorted the foreigner out of the apartment before vanishing into the night.
Detectives managed to track down and arrest Samira alongside one of her accomplices, Paul Webster Mangeni.
“Investigations have since established that the two are part of a notorious syndicate that lures foreigners through dating sites, sets them up in Airbnbs, and robs them of their hard-earned money,” DCI said in a statement.
Both suspects are currently in police custody, awaiting arraignment in court as detectives continue to pursue their fellow accomplice, who remains on the run.
