Kenya’s Special Operations Group (SOG) thwarted a major terror plot following the interception of eight Al-Shabaab agents attempting to place improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Welmerer–Yumbia road in Garissa County.
Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya, in a statement posted on Monday, October 27, 2025, confirmed that the explosives were specifically for use against civilians and security officers along the popular road.
“Our Elite Special Operations Group (SOG) stopped eight Al-Shabaab terrorists who were attempting to set up Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at the Welmerer-Yumbia area,” the statement read.
The operation began following a tip-off by the locals to the security officers regarding suspicious activity along the route. Acting on the tip-off, the SOG deployed a tactical team that engaged the militants and recovered the prepared explosives before they were detonated.
The counterterrorism unit also stated, “The brave officers engaged the terrorists and managed to recover assembled IEDs, which were to be used to attack our mothers, children, and security officers using the Welmerer-Yumbis road.”
During the operation, the police also confiscated weapons and other evidence the suspects planned to use in future attacks.
The SOG acknowledged the crucial role local residents played in providing timely information that enabled the unit to act before the militants detonated the explosives.
Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately, highlighting that community cooperation is vital in preventing attacks.
In addition to recovering the IEDs, the officers confiscated weapons and equipment from the suspects, ensuring that the militants could not redeploy the explosives for any future attacks.
“The SOG appreciates the cooperation of the local community and other stakeholders and urges for enhanced vigilance to stop any terror plots,” the statement added.
