The government has confirmed that another Kenyan, identified as Kevin Kariuki Nduma, has been rescued after being irregularly conscripted into the Russian army, bringing the total number of rescued citizens to four.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said the Kenyan is on his way back home following efforts by Kenya’s Mission in Moscow.
“A fourth Kenyan, irregularly conscripted to serve in the Russian military, is on his way back home,” Sing’oei stated.
“I commend our Mission in Moscow for the effort to rescue and repatriate Kenyans caught in this unfortunate and dangerous situation,” he added.
This follows up on the rescue and repatriation of three other Kenyans: Shaquille Wambo, Pius Mwika and Derick Njaga, as announced by the PS on September 27.
Sing’oei urged Kenyans to be cautious when dealing with employment agencies promising jobs abroad, warning that many trafficking networks disguise themselves as recruitment firms.
“We implore Kenyans to exercise all diligence in verifying the authenticity of any foreign employment contracts and to seek advice from the Ministry and particularly our Diaspora State department, should they have doubt,” he said.
The PS explained that the man’s release is part of a broader mission to repatriate four Kenyans who were captured as prisoners of war and forced to fight for Russia. The plight of the four has been linked to reports of Kenyan nationals being trafficked with promises of employment, only to later end up on the frontlines of the conflict.
This revelation follows recent arrests in Nairobi, where authorities detained a Russian national accused of coordinating the trafficking of Kenyans to Moscow. Police reportedly found 22 Kenyans in rented apartments, allegedly preparing to travel to Russia. During the raid, officers seized recruitment materials, travel documents, and job offer letters.
On Friday, a Kenyan identified as Edward Kamau Gituku was also detained for ten days. He is accused of running a human trafficking network that allegedly lured victims with fake job opportunities before handing them over to recruiters connected to the Russian military.
The government maintains that investigations are ongoing, with Kenyan and international agencies working together to dismantle the networks that have endangered citizens under the pretense of foreign employment.
