A tragic incident has cast a dark shadow over the AFCON 2027 venue, Talanta Stadium in Jamhuri, Nairobi, after a construction worker was found dead on Saturday, September 13.
The victim, 25-year-old Sammy Kyengo, went missing on September 6. His wife, Christine, reported his disappearance, prompting his family and friends to launch a frantic search across Nairobi, combing through hospitals, police stations, and mortuaries. For days, they clung to hope – until Saturday brought devastating news.
Body Discovered at the Construction Site
Police confirmed that Kyengo’s body was found a week later floating in a water sump behind the stadium’s under-construction terraces. A colleague stumbled upon the remains around 9:00 a.m. while preparing the site for plastering. Work immediately came to a halt as officers secured the scene for investigations.
Scene of Crime Investigators then processed the scene before taking the body to Nairobi Funeral Home. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
Injuries Raise Questions
Detectives at the scene reported that the young father of one had visible injuries on the back of his head and neck, with blood seeping from his nose and mouth. They also noted that his phone had remained offline since the day he disappeared.
Christine revealed that her husband had voiced frustrations over delayed wages before he vanished. “He told me the company had refused to pay them since July. He wanted to claim his money and quit the job,” she said.
Colleagues in Shock and Fear
Kyengo’s colleagues described him as a calm, peaceful man who had no known disputes. His death has left many shaken.
“We are shocked and worried. If one of us can disappear and end up dead inside the stadium, in whose hands are we safe?” asked Ivan Bongo, one of the workers.
Workers and relatives are now urging project managers and authorities to guarantee safety at the stadium construction site.
Investigations Underway
The detectives have launched a comprehensive investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing fellow workers, and gathering evidence to reenact Kyengo’s final moments.
No suspects have been identified by authorities, but police believe the murder might be related to a workplace dispute, given Kyengo’s complaints over unpaid wages.
