Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that investigators have already identified several suspects linked to the murder of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu. He said some suspects are undergoing interrogation while others remain on the run as security agencies intensify the probe.
“We have been in touch with the DCI since this thing happened, and I am happy to note that there is some progress. Some persons of interest have been identified,” Murkomen revealed.
Adding that, “Those persons of interest are being interrogated, and so many others are going to be sought. We thank the eyewitnesses who have already come out who were at the scene and many others who are giving information to the DCI.”
Speaking on Thursday during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Migori County, Murkomen assured Kenyans that the government will not relent until those behind the killing face justice.
“This is a very sad thing that has happened in our country, it’s akin to what happened to former MP Ongondo Were, and I am happy to note that there is progress that has been made by the DCI,” Murkomen said.
The CS said the lawyer’s assassination had deeply shaken the nation. While sending his condolences to the bereaved family. Murkomen described Mbobu as his teacher, colleague, and friend.
“We do not know the motive yet. I am very interested to know what really happened… I am in a position of responsibility and in constant consultation with the DCI,” he added.
Murkomen urged Kenyans to volunteer any information that could help investigators and praised eyewitnesses who have already shared their accounts.
“It is in the interest of the security sector and Kenyans that the truth comes out. I am very optimistic that in a very short time, we will have leads as far as this issue is concerned,” he said.
The CS stressed that the government does not prioritize only high-profile cases but is committed to resolving all crimes without discrimination.
“Including the assistant chiefs who were murdered weeks ago in Migori. It is good for the DCI to unravel such acts. I will ensure justice is served and the perpetrators brought to book,” he said.
Autopsy Reveals Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu Was Shot Eight Times
Meanwhile, Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed that two bullets were recovered from Mbobu’s body following an autopsy. He reported that the lawyer died from massive blood loss and severe injuries after being shot eight times.
“Upon having examined the body, we found that Wakili was shot a total of eight times. And with most of the gunshot coming from the right side of the body, we were able to recover two bullets, which are being given to the investigative officer for ballistic purposes,” he said.
Oduor explained that the bullets had damaged blood vessels in the neck, causing extensive bleeding, and also inflicted a spinal injury, though the chest cavity was not affected.
“There was a lot of bleeding because there was an injury to the neck vessels. There was also injury to the spine. So these injuries were severe enough to cause death,” he said.
He added that gunpowder burns on Mbobu’s skin showed the shots were fired at close range, suggesting a carefully planned execution.
