Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has urged the authorities to strictly enforce laws that protect the Kenyan flag, warning that its misuse dishonours the sacrifices that were endured during the country’s fight for independence.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Passaris called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest anyone found misusing or desecrating the national flag. She grounded her request in Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya), which categorically prohibits the inappropriate use, insult, or desecration of the Kenyan flag.
“Section 3 of the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act (Cap 99, Laws of Kenya) prohibits the improper use, insult, or desecration of the Kenyan flag, with penalties for offenders,” she wrote, stressing that the law provides clear guidance on the matter.
Passaris lamented what she described as growing disregard for the national symbol, saying it is “unfortunate to see people abuse our Kenyan flag.” She framed the flag as both a legal obligation and a moral duty, adding: “Blood was shed for this flag to be raised high.”
“I call on @DCI_Kenya to arrest anyone desecrating or misusing our national flag. Our Kenyan flag must be respected, and any other for that matter,” she added.
Outrage as Mogadishu Fans Mock Kenyan Flag

Her remarks followed public uproar after viral videos circulated on TikTok and X showing Mogadishu City FC supporters desecrating the Kenyan flag during the aftermath of a CAF Champions League clash against Kenya Police FC.
The footage showed blatant acts of mockery. In one clip, two fans took turns ridiculing the flag – one spreading it on the ground before kicking it into the air, while the other caught it mid-flight and rubbed it against his crotch as they both burst into laughter.
Another video captured a Mogadishu supporter in a traditional Somali sarong walking up to a Kenya Police FC fan, snatching his Kenyan flag, and tossing it to the ground with casual contempt.
Passaris insisted that such acts must not go unpunished, urging law enforcement to take swift action to defend the honour of Kenya’s most important national symbol.
