A Kombewa businessman, Felix Isaac Olwero, 50, was fatally shot Monday morning near his White House Resort in Kisumu County in what police have described as a tragic case of mistaken identity. Olwero, a former clerk with the Siaya County Assembly, was responding to a report of a failed burglary at his resort when officers mistook him for one of the intruders.
Police said the incident unfolded shortly after a resort manager alerted authorities about a group of burglars attempting to gain entry. Investigators noted that this marked the fifth attempted break-in at the resort in recent days.
Responding officers cordoned off the rear of the property when they spotted five men approaching. Believing the suspects were armed with pangas and other crude weapons and posing a threat, the police reportedly first fired warning shots. One of the individuals reportedly charged toward them, prompting the officers to shoot, fatally injuring Olwero.
Police later confirmed that the deceased was the resort owner, not a suspect, and the case has been officially classified as a mistaken identity incident. Olwero’s body was transported to the mortuary pending an autopsy, while authorities launched a formal investigation into the shooting.
