A Nairobi court has sentenced Nigerian national Alabi Tunde Lateef to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of trafficking cocaine worth nearly Ksh890,800.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) announced on Saturday, August 16, that the Milimani Law Courts convicted Lateef after the prosecution presented strong evidence that proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Investigators told the court that on September 11, 2017, police arrested Lateef in two separate locations while in possession of narcotics. At the General Post Office (GPO) in Nairobi’s Central Business District, he was caught moving 75.4 grammes of cocaine valued at Ksh377,000.
Later that same day in Mwiki, Kasarani, authorities also found him with 102.7 grammes of cocaine with a street value of Ksh513,800.
Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi handed Lateef an eight-year prison term for the two counts. The court ruled that the sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of eight years behind bars.
The ODPP noted that the prosecution team, led by Counsels Wanjiru Naomi and Nyakira Kibera, presented four witnesses whose testimonies played a key role in securing the conviction.
