The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has stepped up investigations into the alarming increase of juvenile gangs in Umoja, Nairobi, after 15-year-old Joshua Kubiti died in a tragic incident.
Recently, a viral video went around social media where boys in groups were filmed engaging in violent confrontations that left Joshua severely injured. He eventually died due to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Radiant Hospital in Umoja.
Police detectives revealed that the juveniles, aged 12 to 19 years, had formed gangs with nicknames such as Chinje, Mbogi, Bad Bunny, and Silent. The gangs are reportedly behind violent encounters, mobile phone theft, and robbery in Umoja, Tena, Innercore, Kayole, Kariobangi, and adjacent estates.
Investigations also established that recruitment is primarily carried out during holidays when schools are closed, exposing the teenagers to crime.
During a concerted operation by Buruburu detectives, 14 juveniles – 10 males and 4 females – were apprehended and arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. Detectives were granted custody orders to conduct in-depth investigations into Joshua’s killing and seek justice for the mourning family.
National Police Service (NPS) assured residents of Nairobi of security, promising to make every effort to dismantle criminal networks. Police confirmed that operations against gangs of youths will go on without letup across Nairobi and the entire nation.
Parents, schools, and leaders of communities have been requested by the government to remain vigilant and work with police to shield children from being diverted into gang life.
